Lesson Plans:
- Chips of Trade – Acting as countries in a simulation game, students discuss how resources are inequitably distributed throughout the world and how this imbalance motivates trade.
- Food for Thought – Acting as residents of five major world regions, students compare various statistics that affect people’s health and well-being.
- Lessons for Life – Students read and discuss a short conversation between two Ethiopian girls, watch two photo essays of school girls in less developed countries, and interpret a graph illustrating the link between female education and fertility rates worldwide.
- People on the Move – Students participate in a “push/pull” simulation to identify reasons people migrate from one place to another and analyze the similarities and differences between two real-world migrations.
- Growing Up Healthy – Through a board game, students are presented with various health-related scenarios that can hurt or help child health and then discuss which public health measures are most effective in keeping people healthy.
Background Reading:
- Global Family Matters – There are vast differences in wealth, energy use, health, and education levels among the over 7 billion people on the planet. Students analyze how these differences relate to population growth and explore strategies to ensure happy, healthy lives for all. Glossary included.
Summative Assessment:
- Global Awareness PSA – Students design an awareness poster or video educating local community members about inequities in global resource use, wealth and health, and identify action steps that anyone can take to reduce global inequalities. Rubric included.
