SUBJECTS: Math, Science

TOPICS: Exponential Growth, Population Biology

Resource Overview

Students participate in a whole-class math simulation showing the growth of a mouse family, then model the growth of a deer family and compare and contrast.

Students will be able to:

  • Using age-appropriate language, explain that reproduction of animal species varies greatly with some species having many, and some species having few, offspring.
  • Using age-appropriate language, explain that the number of offspring and frequency of reproduction affects species’ population growth and size, and apply this knowledge.
  • Use mathematical reasoning and skills to determine the growth of a population based on provided information.
Populations of mice grow quickly and provide an example to elementary students of a high population growth rate

Features of This Resource

  • Math-science integration for K-2 students
  • Options for scaffolding based on students’ needs
