Resource Overview

Students visually show the growth of a population of mice by contributing to a class chart of “thumbprint mice” and by working with base 10 blocks individually.

Students will be able to:
  • Count up to three-digit numbers and represent those numbers visually.
  • Represent two and three-digit numbers using place values and base 10 blocks.
  • Explain that the reproduction of animal species varies greatly and the number of offspring affects the population of that species.
Populations of mice grow quickly and provide an example to elementary students of a high population growth rate

Features of This Resource

  • Opportunity for kinesthetic (tactile) learning
  • Math-science integration
