Resource Overview

Written and scaffolded for ELL, students develop an index of the 10 factors they identify as most important to a sustainable community and develop models for measuring those factors.

Students will be able to:
  • Name three different types of sustainability and categorize ideas representing each.
  • Create a Sustainability Index by assessing and prioritizing ways a community can become sustainable.
  • Apply the Sustainability Index to their own community, identifying where improvements could be made and potential challenges.
  • Define the words: sustainability, community, social, economic, and environmental, and explain what each means in different contexts.
  • Use vocabulary to describe abstract meaning in photographs.
  • Write, read aloud from, and ask questions about a foldable based on a Sustainability Index.
